How to Install & Activate ESET (Licence Key Guide)
This guide shows you how to install ESET and activate it using your licence key. If you purchased ESET from us, your licence key will be sent by email after checkout. Follow the steps below and check the common fixes if anything doesn’t look right.
Before you start
- Make sure your device is connected to the internet.
- Have your ESET licence key ready (copy/paste is best to avoid typos).
- Check how many devices your licence covers (e.g. 1 device / 5 devices) and the licence length (e.g. 1 year / 2 years).
Step 1: Download ESET
- On the device you want to protect, download the ESET installer using the install link/instructions provided with your order email.
- Save the installer, then double-click it to start installation.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to complete setup.
Once installed, ESET may open automatically. If not, open ESET from your desktop shortcut or Start menu.
Step 2: Activate ESET using your licence key
Method A (most common): Activate inside the ESET app
- Open ESET.
- Look for an option such as Activate, Enter a licence key or Subscription.
- Paste your licence key and continue.
- Wait for confirmation that protection is active.
Method B: Activate via ESET account (if prompted)
- If ESET asks you to sign in or create an account, follow the prompt to create/sign in.
- Choose the option to add a licence and enter your licence key.
- Assign the licence to this device when asked.
How to check your ESET licence status
- Open ESET and look for Protection status (it should show active/secured).
- Check the licence/subscription section for expiry date and device count (wording varies by product).
Common issues (and quick fixes)
1) “Licence key is invalid”
- Copy/paste the key to avoid typing errors.
- Check you haven’t included any extra spaces at the start/end.
- Make sure you’re entering the key in the correct place (activation/licence section).
2) Installation fails or gets stuck
- Restart the device and try again.
- Uninstall any existing antivirus/security software, restart, then reinstall ESET.
- Make sure Windows is up to date and you have a stable internet connection.
3) “You have reached the device limit”
- This usually means the licence is already assigned to the maximum number of devices.
- If you’ve replaced a PC, you may need to remove the old device entry (depending on your ESET account/licence type).
- If you’re unsure, contact us with your order number and we’ll advise the quickest fix.
4) ESET shows installed but “not activated”
- Open ESET and go to the activation/licence section again and re-enter the key.
- Restart the device and check the protection status.
- Ensure the device date/time is correct (incorrect time can sometimes affect licence checks).
ESET Install & Activation FAQ
My ESET licence key says “invalid” — what should I check?
Copy/paste the key to avoid typos and make sure there are no extra spaces at the start/end. Confirm you’re entering it in the activation/licence section of the ESET app (wording varies slightly by version).
Can I use the same licence on multiple devices?
Yes, if your licence includes multiple devices (for example, 5 devices). Install ESET on each device and activate using the same licence until you reach the device limit.
ESET says I’ve reached the device limit — what does that mean?
It usually means the licence is already assigned to the maximum number of devices. If you’ve replaced a PC, you may need to remove the old device entry (depending on the licence type/account). Contact us with your order number and we’ll advise the quickest fix.
Installation fails — how can I fix it?
Restart the device and try again. If another antivirus is installed, uninstall it first, restart, then reinstall ESET. A stable internet connection and up-to-date Windows also help prevent install issues.
